Son of William and Madge TURNER of Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
His parents’ marriage is proving elusive.
John was born 11 November 1886 in the Sandwich Islands, Pacific Ocean, and educated at Hamilton Crescent School, Glasgow.
He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.
On the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census, he is proving elusive.
He was formerly in the 1st Lanark Rifles, discharged 31 March 1908 time expired, and was now in the National Reserve.
Wartime Service
He attested in Hertford 14 October 1914 in the Territorial Force 4 years service in the U.K.: a mechanical draughtsman aged 28, 5’9″ tall, and was Private 3491 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment.
He served at Home 14 October to 4 November 1914, and in France 5 November 1914 to 15 April 1916, during which time he was appointed Lance-Corporal 14 January 1915, Acting Corporal 20 May 1915, promoted to Corporal 12 June 1915, appointed Acting Sergeant 6 November 1915, and promoted Sergeant 13 November 1915.
He served at Home again, with the Herts Regiment, from 16 April to 4 September 1916, when he was discharged in consequence of being appointed to a commission in the 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders.
He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 6 November 1914, and was killed in action.
