Pre War
William was born in Datchworth in late 1890 to parents George and Mary. His father was a jobbing gardener. In 1901 they were living in Burnham Green. In 1911 they are still there and William was recorded as William Ernest, a farm labourer, and his mother was a widow. There was another son recorded.
In army records he residence was given as Sandridge when he died, so this accounts for his enlistment at Welwyn and probably accounts for the fact that he is not on the Datchworth Memorial.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Welwyn and after training arrived in France 12 Sep 1914, for that date he mus5t have had previous military service, i.e. on the Reserve list.
Sadly, he didn't survive long.
