Frederick was born on 1 Aug 1885 (baptised 4 Oct 1885, Holy Trinity, Frogmore) in St Stephen, Park Street to William Turner, a sewage farm Foreman, and Flora Ruth (nee Coe).
On the 1891 Census his parents were living at the Foreman’s House at the sewage Farm, St Stephens with the rest of the Family: Agnes E (born 1877), Florence W (born 1881), Herbert Walter (born 1883), Charles V (born 1888) and Walter (born 1890). On the 1901 Census the family now consisting of parents, Agnes, Florence, Herbert Walter (now an ironmonger’s assistant), Frederick (a coachman), Charles V (Shop assistant & tailors cutter), Walter, Edith (born 1892), William H (born 1894) and Sarah A (born 1898) were living at Branch Road, Park Street. On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Herbert Walter (now a domestic gardener), Walter (an assistant domestic engineer), William (a labourer, Midland Railway) and Sarah were still living at Branch Road, Park Street.
Frederick enlisted at Deal in Royal Marines Light Infantry as Private 12416 on 14 May 1901, he gained qualifications in Signalling, both semaphore and Army and spent some time on the China Station. He was discharged on 28 Oct 1910.
Wartime Service
Following the outbreak of the Great War Frederick volunteered on 15 Dec 1914 and was enlisted in Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment) as Private 19197.
He went to France on 9 Sep 1915. No Service record was found for Frederick so his service Battalion was not determined. He reported sick and was found to be Anaemic, due to Malaria from his previous service overseas. Posted to 11th (Reserve) Battalion, he was discharged as medical unfit for further service on 4 Jun 1916 and after returning to the family home he died from Heart Failure on 9 Jun 1916. He was buried in Holy Trinity, Frogmore.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £9 was paid to his father, a pension of 24s/week was also paid. Brother Herbert Walter served as Corporal 15468 7th Bedfordshire Regiment, and was killed in action 28 Sep 1916.
