George Roger Turk was born in 1897 in Cheshunt (baptised 22 Aug 1897, Goff’s Oak) a natural son of Alfred Walter Turk & Sarah (nee Brand), of Primrose Cottage, 2 Clifford Road, New Barnet.


On the 1901 Census George (listed as cousin) was living with Frederick William Brand, his maternal Uncle, & Evelyn Elizabeth (nee Toliday) at Alms Yard, Northaw, Potters Bar. His family of father Alfred, mother Sarah, Walter A (born 1889), John H (born 1892), Edith H (born 1894) and Thomas A (born 1900) were living at Woodbine Court, Bulwer Road, New Barnet.

On the 1911 Census George (listed as Georgie, nephew) was still living with Fredrick & Evelyn at 2 Myrtle Cottages, Coopers Lane, Northaw. His father, mother, John H, Edith, Thomas, Kathleen E (born 1902), Charles (born 1904), Rosaline (born 1905),Muriel (born 1910) were living at 2 Primrose Cottage, Monken Hadley.

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for George, He probably enlisted in early 1916 as Private 6200 in the Hertfordshire Regiment. At some time he was transferred to Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry as Private 28714. He may have gone to France to join the 1st battalion of the Regiment who as part of 5th Division fought at Arras in 1917 before being moved to the Ypres Sector for the Battles of Passchendaele, Polygon Wood (26 Sep-3 Oct 1917) and Broodseinde (4 Oct 1917). During this last engagement George was reported killed in action, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on Tyne Cot Memorial

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £6 10s and arrears of £3 1 s 1d was paid to his aunt Evelyn Brand. Brother John Henry Turk served with Army Service Corps as and as Private 52568 11 Battalion Essex Regiment and was killed in action 18 Oct 1918.
