[Stewart] William Tuckwell was born on 1 April 1877 in Aylesbury, Bucks according to his Canadian enlistment form, the son of David and Mary Tuckwell, (N.B. he was registered as William Tuckwell in the June quarter of 1876 in Aylesbury and was always listed only as William on all but one Census return).
On the 1881 Census the family were living at 14 Ardenham Street, Aylesbury where his father was working as a Joiner & Carpenter. They remained there in 1891 at which time William was working as a Compositor (on trial)
He married Rhoda Louisa Tasker in 1899 in Hemel Hempstead and on the 1901 Census they were living at Crescent Road, Hemel Hempstead where he was working as a print compositor. He also worked for the "The Gazette" newspaper in Hemel Hempstead as a football reporter. Their daughter Doris Mary was born in Hemel Hempstead on 28 June 1901.
They emigrated to Canada and arrived in St John, New Brunswick, Canada on 27 April 1907. Their two sons Sidney and Lloyd were born in Canada and the family lived at Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
Wartime Service
He enlisted on 29 September 1915 and served with the 82nd Battalion, 10th Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment).
He was killed in action on 28 April 1917 at Vimy Ridge, aged 40 during the assault on the village of Arleux-en-Gohelle.
He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France.
