Pre War

Son of William Hodgson and Frances Jane (nee DALLYN) TUCKER of South Edmonton.

His parents married 13 March 1881 at West Hackney Parish Church, London.

William was born 14 March 1882 in the Barnstable, Devon, district, and attended Watford Grammar School from March 1894 to December 1896.  He sailed from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia, 2 April 1903 on the Allen Line Tunisian, a labourer aged 21.

On the 1891 Census, a scholar aged 9 he lived in Bushey, Herts, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1901 Census, a salesman in the furnishing trade aged 19, he still lived in Bushey, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Canadian Census, a farmer aged 28 he lived in Saskatchewan.

Wartime Service

He attested 16 October 1915 at Edmonton, Alberta: a farmer aged 33, unmarried, 6’1″ tall, C of E; his next-of-kin was his mother of Edmonton.  He was killed in action on the Somme.

Additional Information

The published Watford Grammar School Book of Remembrance entry reads:

TUCKER, WILLIAM EDWARD. School period: March,1894, to December, 1896. Private, 10th Canadians. Killed in action on the Somme, 26th September, 1916.”
