Royal Masonic School Memorial, Rickmansworth

Pre War

Born on 11 Aug 1892 in Fulford, York son of Samuel George and Alice M. Crummack. Educated at the Royal Masonic School 1903-08. He joined the Merchant Navy and obtained his First Mate Ticket on 5 Feb 1915 and his Master’s Ticket on 24 Mar 1916 at Harwich.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of WW1 he was on the City of Lincoln as Third Officer in the far east. He returned as a passenger from New York to Liverpool on 21 Dec 1914 on the SS Orduna to enlist and was appointed Sub-Lieutenant on 10 Feb 1915 and served on HMS Alecto, a depot ship serving submarines at Yarmouth. Appointed Lieutenant on 10 Feb 1917 he was still on Alecto serving on submarines. He died when Submarine H10 was lost in the North Sea. The cause of the loss is unknown.
