Pre War

Son of William Crumplin, of Hartley Wintney, Basingstoke; husband of Adela Crumplin, of Batford Mills, Harpenden, Herts. at the time of Charles’ death and they had children. Charles was born in Hartley Witney. He lived at Batford Mills. He enlisted in Bedford in July 1916.


Charles Henry was born in Hartley Wintney, Hants, to William Crumplin and Ann (nee Eggar). On the 1891 Census Charles was living with his widowed mother in at Cricket Green, Hartley Wintney and was an agricultural labourer. By 1901 Charles was a groom and boarding at a stables in Camberwell, London. He married Adela Arnold in 1906 and in 1911 Charles was a Groom and was living at Townsend Lane Harpenden. There were three children, 2 boys – Charles Arthur and William F and  1 girl – Doris G. 

Wartime Service

Charles was enlisted in 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment in Jul 1916 as Private 33202.


They were in trenches at Mazingarbe (near Lens) and although 17 Jun 1917 is recorded as a quiet day there were 2 other ranks killed of Charles was one.

Additional Information

His wife, Mrs A. Crumplin, Batford Mills, Harpenden, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "NEVER FORGOTTEN YOUR DEVOTED WIFE AND CHILDREN" War gratuity of £3 and arrears of £4 0s 2d paid to his widow Adela
