Pre War

Born on 2 Mar 1899 and baptised on 4 Apr 1899 in Skelbrooke, Yorkshire son of Col. Frederick Knight Essell, C.M.G. and Nella Lilian (Batt) Essell of Bevere Knoll, Worcestershire. Educated at Haileybury College 1914-15.

Wartime Service

First commissioned 2nd Lieutenant R.A.F on 26 Apr 1918. Accidentally killed on active service in Mesopotamia. D.F.C. F. O. R N Essell. R.A.F. (since killed). For great gallantry and devotion to duty This officer has flown over 125 hours, and carried out 50 bomb raids. He is a very keen and daring pilot, who on two occasions has been, shot down by hostile action. (London Gazette 28 Oct 1921)
