Pre War

Joseph was born in Hatchen(ing) Green on 13 Dec 1887, the youngest son of Joseph English, labourer, and Margaret (nee Simmons).


On 1901 Census Joseph aged 13 is working as a butcher’s boy and on the 1911 Census he was roller hand in a rubber works, probably the Almagam in Lower Luton Road,


He was living with his family at West Common, Harpenden. Joseph’s  father is absent from the return as he was a nightwatchman at Rothamsted. Joseph married Rose Deamer in 1913.

Wartime Service

Joseph was enlisted as Gunner 124937 in the Royal Garrison Artillery.


He died from pneumonia on 16 Dec 1916. Records state he was not eligible for a war gratuity as his service was less than 6 months. He is buried in St Nicholas churchyard.

Additional Information

Arrears of £2 8s 4d was paid to his widow, Rose.


Joseph has personal headstone which reads: "Loving Memory Joseph English Who Died November 16th 1916 Aged 29 Years Until The Day Breaks".
