Pre War

He was born about 1889 in Wrestlingworth, but sometimes given as Biggleswade – a nearby larger town - in Bedfordshire and later resided in Hitchin. His parents were William and Sarah A Endersby).

In 1891 the family were living at Willian Road Cottages, Hitchin. Present were both parents: William (36) and Sarah A (36), with William and working as a labourer. Their children were: Henry E (16), Emma (15), William (12), Frederick (10), Samuel (2) and Ernest (1).

By 1901 the family were living at 13 Anderson Row, Hitchin. Present were both parents, with William and working as a timber merchant’s labourer. The only children remaining were Samuel and Herbert (11) – not listed before.

By 1911 Samuel had left the family home and was found on the 1st Bn Lincolnshire Regiment census return.

Samuel was a soldier before the First World War and was amongst those of the 2nd Lincolnshires who were listed to embark for India on about 2nd December 1908 

Officially Edward was recorded as born in Westlingworth, Beds., and living in Hitchin, Herts., when he enlisted in London.

Wartime Service

Samuel was given Regimental Number 7756 in the 2nd Battalion which was part of the 25th Brigade in the 8th Division of IV Corps in the 1st Army. He entered France on 5 November 1914.

He was killed in action in France. This was not long after the Battle of Aubers in the Fromelles area.

He is buried in Plot 6, Row A, Grave 17 in the Royal Irish Rifles Cemetery in France. This cemetery is in Laventie about three miles south west of Armentieres.

Brother of Mr. E. H. Endersby, of 77, Victoria Rd., Bletchley, Bucks. 

After his death £21 8s 2d was authorised to go to his father, William on 21 October 1915. Later, on 2 January 1920 £1 5s to each of the following, brothers, Henry E and Ernest, sister Emma Chamberlain and the same amount which appears tp read Ret (retained?) for Btn (Battalion?).
