Pre War
John Emery was born on 4 December 1878 in Bushey, Herts, the son of William and Elizabeth Emery (nee Ashby), and was baptised on 25 July 1880 in Bushey.
On the 1881 Census the family were living at The Rutts, Bushey where his father was working as a carpenter but had moved to Islington in London by the 1891 Census. In 1901 John, although listed as a servant, was working as a hairdresser for Arthur Birtchnell who ran a family hairdressing business at 130 High Street, Slough, Bucks.
Although not found in the 1911 census, he gave his occupation as hairdresser when he married Frances Maud Collins on 25 June 1911 at All Saints Church, South Acton, Middlesex and had two sons, John William, (born 1912) and George Edward (born 1914).
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Richmond, Surrey, and initially joined the East Surrey Regiment, later transferring to the Royal Fusiliers.
John died on 3 February 1917 from nephritis whilst on active service in France and is buried in Merville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Additional Information
His widow, Frances, received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 0s 9d. She was awarded a pension of £1 2s 11d a week for herself and her two children, giving her address as 5-8 Windell Road, Shepherds Bush, London. She later remarried to Frederick Austin in 1936.
