Sydney Edward Trewinnard was born in Islington, London, on 24 July 1879, the son of Benjamin and Eliza Trewinnard and one of eight children. He was baptised on 19 October 1879 at St Andrew's Church, Stoke Newington, Hackney, London. 

On the 1881 Census the family were living at Islington, London, and his father was working as a watchmaker. They remained there in 1891 and 1901, at which time Sydney was working as a draper's clerk. He was educated at Tottenham Road School from 10 January 1887 and his home address was recorded as 31 Queen Margaret Grove. 


He married Florence Maud Beesley on 27 June  1908 in Islington and on the 1911 Census they were living at 326 Clissold Road, Stoke Newington, London, with their daughter Kathleen and lodger Hubert Marshall. Sydney was working as a correspondence clerk for an advertising company. They later had another daughter, Myrtha in 1913. He later lived at Victoria Cottage, Shenley, nr Barnet, Herts.

Wartime Service

He served with the Royal Air Force from 13 March 1916 as Sergeant Mechanic but was discharged on 4 March 1919 as unfit for further service.


He died on 10 November 1919 at St Albans General Hospital, Herts, aged 40, and is buried in Shenley (St Botolph) Churchyard, Herts.

He is buried in St Botolph Churchyard, Shenleybury, and his private headstone (not CWGC) bears the inscription:

N PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF MY DEAR HUSBAND SYDNEY EDWARD TREWINNARD
[LATE SGT. R.A.F.]
WHO PASSED OVER 10TH NOVEMBER 1919 AGED 40 YEARS.
A DEVOTED HUSBAND. TENDER DADDY, TRUE FRIEND.


His widow obtained probate on 5 December 1919 with effects of £200.  A war pension was refused as " disease not contracted on active service". Her address was given on pension cards as 51 Oxford Road, Canonbury.


Shenley (St Botolphs) Churchyard is in Shenleybury.
