Pre War
Frederick Albert was born 27 Nov 1892 in St Stephens, Frogmore to John Ellwood, a farm labourer , and Lizzie (Eliza nee Slaughter). The family consisted of parents, Florence born 1878), Alice (born 1881) Emily (born 1884), Eliza (born 1886), and John (born 1890). On the 1901 Census Frederick was living with his parents, Thomas (born 1892), William (born 1896) and Ethel (born 1898) in Colney Street, Frogmore. On the 1911 Census living with his parents at Bridge Foot Cottages, Frederick and William were both farm labourers, together with Ethel and Annie (born 1902).
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Frederick. He volunteered after the Great War was declared in Aug 1914 and serve with the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry as Private 10302 and posted to 5th (Service) Battalion (later Lance Corporal). He went to France with the Battalion as part of 42 Brigade, 14 (Light) Division on 20 May 1915, landing at Boulogne on 21 May 1915. Deploying to the Ypres area, the Division after familiarisation with the area went into the front line for the attack on Bellewaarde Farm (24-25 Sep 1915), attacking following a barrage on the 25 Sep at 4.20 am. The objectives were taken but were lost to a German Counter attack later. It was during this action that Frederick was reported Missing and his death was presumed as 25 Sep 1915. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £4 and Arrears of £3 10s was paid to his father John.
