Hunsdon War Memorial Memorial Plaque St Dunstan’s Church, Hunsdon
Pre War
Born in 1898, in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, to parents John and Celia, he had five sisters and one brother Edward who also died in the war. By the 1911 census they were living in 3& 4 Marsh Hall, Waltham Abbey, Essex, his father was employed on a farm as a cowman, John also worked on the farm. At the time of John’s death his parents were living at Pear Tree Cottage, Holyfield, Waltham Abbey.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Hertford and posted to the West Riding Regt. 1/4th Battalion, a Territorial unit, mobilised in August 1914 and sent to France from 12th April 1915. They fought at Aubers Ridge in May 1915. The following year at the Somme they took place in fighting around Albert, Bazentin Ridge, Poziers Ridge and Flers-Courcelette, and after the last of these John Elliston died of wounds received.
Additional Information
Please note the above is recorded as Elliston on the plaque but on the war memorial as Ellison and that the family name began as Allestone in 1891 and by 1911 the father signed the census as Alleston. His brother is recorded as Alliston on the CWGC record
