Pre War
Born on 3 Nov 1895 in “Killora”, Normanby, Eston, Yorkshire son of Dr. Francis Edward Townsend and Annette Theresa (Steavenson) Townsend. Educated at Haileybury College 1910-11 and then worked in the Cargo Fleet Iron Works. He was unmarried.
Wartime Service
Enlisted in Aug 1914 in the East Riding Yeomanry and then obtained a commission in the Durham Light Infantry on 16 Nov 1914. He was invalided out due to repeat attacks of acute rheumatism. He returned to work at the Iron Works as a sub-manager but applied again and received a commission in the Royal Flying Corps on 8 Jun 1916. He entered France on 17 Jan 1917 and was killed in action on the Somme.
