Pre War

Son of James and Sarah Ann Pope (nee GUY) TOURLE of West Croydon, Surrey.

His parents married 20 October 1874 at St Mary’s, Islington, London.  Sarah died 29 January 1927 in Croydon aged 75.

Edgar was born 1887 in Brighton, Sussex, and resided in West Croydon.

He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.

On the 1891 Census, aged 3 he lived in Brighton, with his parents and eight siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 13 he lived in Croydon, with his parents and five siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a compositor aged 23, he still lived in Croydon, with his mother in the household of his brother.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 15532 3rd Queen’s Regiment.  He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was presumed killed in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Edgar’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. There is an In Memoriam for Edgar in the Epsom Advertiser dated 22 March 1918.

*1 Probably more correctly (City of London) Bn. London Regiment.
