Lionel Ernest Ellingham was born on 6 January 1896 in Bushey, Herts, the son of Gabriel and Sarah Ellingham, and was baptised on 2 May 1897 in Oxhey, Herts. He was one of seven children, but two died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 87 Market Street, Watford, Herts, where his father was said to be 'living on his own means'. They had moved to 2 Wellington Road, Watford by 1911 and although Lionel was a 15 year old scholar, his father was a retired farmer.
At the time of enlistment, he was living at Radwinter, Nr Saffron Walden, Essex and was listed as a farmer living at Radwinter End in the 1917 Kelly's Directory.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Saffron Walden, Essex and joined the Royal Fusiliers*, serving with the 11th Battalion.
Lionel was killed in action on 10 August 1917 but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 11s 8d and also obtained probate of Lionel's estate on 14 May 1919 in London with effects of £699 14s 10d.
No pension records have been found. His parents later lived at 2 St John's Road, Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, Herts
