Sydney Robert Eldred was born in Barnet on 11 Apr 1897 (baptised 6 May 1897 at Christ Church, Barnet)  to Edmund Eldred, shopkeeper and corn merchant, and Jessie Beatrice (nee Schmidt).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Jack (John Edmund born 1896), Sydney, and Rose Hoiles (nurse domestic0 were living at 145. High Street, South Mimms and on the 1911 Census the family of parents, Marjory Kathleen (born 1894), Jack, Sydney and Richard (born 1902) were living at Dancers Hill Farm, Dancers Hill, South Mimms

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Sydney. Other records state service as Private 2779 Sussex Yeomanry enlisted at Brighton, Sussex. This would some time in 1915 (serial 2375 was issued in 31 Dec 1914. He was transferred to Queens (Royal West Surrey Regiment) as Private 22518 initially in 10 (Service) Battalion (Battersea). He went France to join the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment.


 In 1917 the 2nd Battalion were deployed in the Ypres sector and took part in the Battles of Polygon Wood (26 Sep-3 Oct 1917, Broodseinde, (4 Oct 1917), Poelcapelle (9 Oct 1917) and 2nd Passchendaele (26 Oct-10 Nov 19170 It was during this last battle that Sydney was reported killed in action on 29 Oct 1917. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £10 10s and arrears of £5 1s 8d was paid to his father Edmund.
