Pre War

Albert Eggleton was born in 1889 in Marylebone, London to Joseph Eggleton, a carman, and Elizabeth (nee Littlechild).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Albert and Ernest (born 1891) were living at 21, Sherborne Street, Marylebone.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Albert and Ernest  were living at 8, Keppel Mews, St Giles, Bloomsbury, London.


Albert enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment as Private 9981 in 1908.


On the 1911 Census Albert was listed as a Lance Corporal in 4th Battalion the Worcestershire Regiment in India.


His family of parents and Ernest (a theatrical property master) were living at 27, Candahar road, Battersea London. Albert's connection to Tring is through it being His Father's birthplace.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Albert. At some time he was promoted to Serjeant. He would probably have been serving in the 3rd Battalion when the Great War commenced in Aug 1914. The Battalion was part of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division and went to France landing at Rouen on 16 Aug 1914. They were to take part in the Battles of Mons (23-24 Aug 1914), le Cateau (26 Aug 1914) , Marne (7-10 Sep 1914), Aisne (12-15 Sep 1914) le Bassee , Messines, Armentieres (10 October – 2 November 1914),   and the Winter operations in the Ypres area.


Albert was wounded and returned to UK, being treated at 3rd London Hospital, Wandsworth where he died of his wounds on 17 Mar 1915.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 and arrears of £8 15s 4d was paid to his father.
