Pre War
George Algernon Egerton was born on 1 December 1870 in Worsley, Lancs, the son of the Hon. Algernon Fulke Egerton and Mrs Alice Egerton of Worsley, Manchester and was baptised on 6 January 1871 at St Mark, Worsley, Lancs.
On the 1871 Census the family were living at Princes Terrace, Westminster as his father was a Member of Parliament but by 1881 George was a pupil at The Evelyn School, Colham Green, Hillingdon, Middlesex. He enlisted into the 1st Cavalry Brigade, 19th Hussars and on 10 Oct 1891 was appointed 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in 1902 and on the 1911 Census he was a serving Major in 19th Hussars (unmarried) at Wellington Lines, Aldershot.
Wartime Service
Prior to the First World War he served in the South African wars. As Commanding Officer he was walking along the reserve trenches of Potijze Wood, Belgium at around 5.00 pm on 12 May 1915 when he was wounded.
He died of those wounds the following day.
