Pre War
Charles Arthur Tomlin was born in Islington in 1883 in 10 Andover Gardens, the son Elisha Tomlin, a police constable, and Emma (nee Baker).
His father was born in Hemel Hempstead, Herts in October 1844 and served as a Police Constable. Eisha resigned from the Constabulary and received a police pension from 20 February 1887 but died later the same year (1887). On the 1881 Census the family, Father, Mother, brothers Henry William, Walter Elisha, Samuel Oscar, and sister Rose were living at 36 Alsen Road, Holloway. The family then lived at 61 Alsen Road, Holloway. On the 1891 Census Emma Tomlin and son Elisha are recorded living on Kentish Town Road but there seems to be no record of the rest of the family including Charles.
His mother Emma married John G Harris in 1895.
Charles married Ada Boost on 4 August 1901 at St Mark, Tollington Park, Islington, Middx and on the 1911 Census, they were living at 26 Bedford Terrace, Holloway, Middx with their five children, Emma Rose, Ada Florence, Charles Arthur, Lillian Maude and Frederick John. They later had 3 more children. His Mother Emma and Stepfather are recorded at the same address in 1911. His widow , Ada, later lived at 23 Glenview Gardens, Hammerfield.
Wartime Service
Charles enlisted at St Pancras as Private 7013 in 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment. He was promoted to Lance Corporal.
He probably enlisted in soon after declaration of War in 1914 as the 2nd Battalion sailed in Mar 1915, and landed 25 Apr 1915 on Cape Helles, Gallipoli. (Charles’ Medal Card has a date of 26 May 1915 which may be a clerical error.) The 2nd Battalion were engaged in the Battles of Krithia and during the 3rd Battle, Charles was killed in action on 5 June 1915. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £1 13s 5d. She also received a pension of £1 10s 6d increasing to £1 13s a week from 6 March 1916.
