Pre War

Edward Charles Edwin was born in Winslow, Bucks. in 1884 to George Edwin, and Elizabeth (nee Cannon).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Arthur (born 1878), Bertha E (born 1881),Edward C and Ethel M (born 1890) were living at 15, Union Street, Winslow, Bucks.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Bertha, Edward C, Ethel, Lucy (born 1895) and Alice were living at Vicarage Lane, Winslow.


Charles married Annie Marie Jakeman in 1907. 


On the 1911 Charles Annie Marie and daughter Winifred (born 1909) were living at 28, Park Road, Tring. There would be two further children: Edward A (born 1913) and William T (born 1915).

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for Charles who was enlisted at Dover in Royal West Kent Regiment as Private 16905. He was transferred to 4th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) as Private G/40917 (possibly in late 1916).


In 1917 the battalion was part of 63 Brigade 37 Division and took part in Arras Offensive at the 1st Battle of the Scarpe (9-14 Apr 1917). It was in this action the Charles was killed, his remains were not( recovered and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £4 15s 9d was paid to his widow.
