Walter
Tite was born in Bishop's Stortford in 1882 to George Valentine and Ann Tite,
and baptised on 2 November 1882 at St Michael’s, Bishop's Stortford. By 1891
the family had moved to Tottenham, where they remained in 1901. But on the 1911 Census he was living as a
boarder with Charles and Alice Calf at 72 Langhedge Terrance, Langhedge Lane,
Upper Edmonton and working as a General Smith.
Wartime Service
He
enlisted in Mill Hill, Middlesex and served in the Leicestershire Regiment
under Reg. Nos. 5134 and 40363. The 6th Battalion took part in many of the
Battles of the Somme in 1916, including the Battle of Albert, Battle of Bazentin Ridge, Battle of
Flers-Courcelette, Battle of Morval and Battle of Le Transloy. At some point
Walter was wounded, and died of those wounds in France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 8s 0d. His mother received a pension of 10s 6d a week from 24 July 1917.
