Charles Henry Edwards was born in 1883 in Aspenden, Hertfordshire, the son of Daniel and Mary Edwards (nee Ives), and was baptised on 22 March 1883 in Aspenden.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Malling Yard, Aspenden, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. His mother died in 1899, aged 37 and in 1901 he was living with his widowed father and siblings Ernest, Arthur, Rose, William and Frederick and Charles was working as a bricklayer's labourer.
In 1911 Charles' father was living with his brother Ernest, his wife and family in Buntingford. Meanwhile, Charles had enlisted into the Lancashire Fusiliers and was recorded as a Private in the Assaye Military Barracks, South Tedworth, Hants, having enlisted in London.
Wartime Service
He was already a serving soldier at the outbreak of war and was sent to the Western Front on 22 August 1914, serving with the 2nd Battalion.
Charles was killed in action on 24 May 1915 but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial., Belgium.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £12 11s 6d. No pension records have been found.
