Pre War

Charles Edward Edwards was born in Layston, Nr. Buntingford, Herts, in 1890, the son of Walter and Eliza Edwards, and was one of seven children. He was baptised on 27 April 1890 in Layston. 


On the 1891 Census the family were living in Harestreet Lane, Layston,  near Alswick Hall and his father was working as an agricultural labourer. Also living with them was Fanny Edwards, his step-sister.  They remained at Harestreet Lane in 1901 but by 1911 they had moved to Meeting Alley, Baldock Lane, Buntingford and Charles was working as a nurseryman.

Wartime Service

Charles joined the Royal Field Artillery as a Gunner and went to Egypt on 19 July 1915. He was later described as a Sergeant on the Register of Soldiers' Effects and as a Signaller on his CWGC headstone.  


Charles died on 10 March 1919 in the Cambridge registration area and is buried in Layston Churchyard Extension, Herts.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £25 10s and a proportion of  pay owing amounting to £9 4s 4d. His father received pay owing of £4 0s 6d.


Brother William served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and died from wounds on 26 April 1917. Brother Richard joined the Royal Navy and was killed at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. 


His mother Eliza (Elizabeth) received a pension in respect of her three sons but the amount is not known.
