Percy Eden was born in Cheshunt/Waltham Cross, (depending on the document), Hertfordshire, in 1891, son of Elias Eden who worked at The Royal Gun Powder Factory, Waltham Abbey and Maria Ann Eden (nee Blake). Percy was one of eight children although one died in infancy.
1891 Census records Percy aged 4 months, living with his parents, and three brothers, William (4), Robert (3) and Walter (2) at, 33 Albert Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
Percy was Baptised on 16th October 1895, in Waltham Cross, Herts.
1901 Census. Percy (10) is at school, living with his parents, four brothers and two sisters at, 5 Albert Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census. Percy is working as a Nursery hand, living with his parents, three brothers and three sisters at, 30 Melbourne Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.
In January 1912, Percy enlisted, posted to the 2nd Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, (The Duke of York’s Own), with the service number 9772.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Percy and the 2nd Battalion, was stationed at Kamptee in India, returning home in December 1914, joining the Newley formed 83rd Brigade of the 28th Division at Hurley Park, near Winchester. They were mobilized for war in January 1915, sailing from Southampton, for Le Havre, France, arriving on 15th/16th January 1915. They were stationed in the area between Bailleul and Hazebrouck. Seeing action at the Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Loos. In October 1915, the Battalion, sailed from Marseilles, France, for Alexandria in Egypt. In January 1916, they were sent to Salonika.
The exact date is not known, but Percy returned home medically unfit for active service, joining the 3rd Battalion on his return to England. He was discharged on 26th February 1917, under “Para 392 (xvi) Kings Regulations) Medically unfit for active service. He was awarded the Silver War Badge No. 142168 on 19th March 1917.
Percy married Elizabeth Charlotte Potter in 1918, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx, it is believed they had one son Percy Donald Eden born in 1919.
Percy died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis on 13th February 1920, he was buried in the Cheshunt Burial Grounds, Cheshunt, on 18th February 1920, aged 29, (CWGC give his age at death as 35).
Additional Information
Elizabeth applied for a widow’s pension but was refused on the grounds she married Percy after his discharge, at the time her address was 40 York Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His widow, Mrs. E. C. Eden, 7 Spencer Road, Hern Hill, S. E. 24. ordered his headstone inscription: "LOVING MEMORIES".
