Pre War

Charles TIDY was born on 22nd April 1882, in Croydon, Surrey, son of Thomas Henry Tidy a Bricklayer and Mary Tidy (nee Letts). One of their ten children.


Charles was baptised on 15th October 1882, at St John’s Church, Croydon, Surrey.


1891 Census records Charles aged 10, at school, living with his parents, three sisters and five brothers at 54 Mitcham Road, Croydon, Surrey.


1901 Census, Charles 18, is employed as a Bricklayer, living with his parents, two sisters and three brothers still at 54 Mitcham road, Croydon, surrey.


Charles married Jennie Skinner in 1909, in Croydon, Surrey, They went on to have three children Eliza May born in November 1911, Allan born September 1913 and Margon born April 1916.


1911 census records Charles married to Jennie, they are living at 1 Newhaven Road, South Norwood, Surrey.


The family later lived at “Hazelhurst” Kings Road, London Colney, Herts.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted at Croydon, Surrey, posted to the Royal Army Service corps, issued with the service No. 53910, later transferred to the Lancashire Fusiliers with the service No. 39101. The 3rd/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers landed at Le Havre, France, on 1st March 1917.


Charles was Killed in Action on 10th October 1917 aged 35, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium to the missing. Panel 54 to 60. At the time of his death, he was serving with “C” company, 3rd/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.

Additional Information

Jennie was awarded a grant of £5, on 11th February 1918, and a widow’s pension of 29s/7d (£1-9s-7d) a week from 6th August 1918, and his effects of £4-11s-06d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £4.
