Pre War

Son of William Evans and Minnie (nee WATKINS) EAST of Watford.

His parents married 19 August 1893 at St Matthew’s, Oxhey, Herts.  William died 1928 in Watford aged 57, and was buried 16 January in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Minnie died 14 April 1950 in Watford aged 79, and was buried 18 April, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Charles was born 31 July 1896 in Watford,  He sailed 3rd class from Liverpool to St John, New Brunswick, on the Allen Line Victorian, 4 March 1914: a stableman aged 18.

On the 1901 Census, aged 4 he lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a schoolboy aged 14, he lived in Leeds, Yorks, in the household of his uncle and aunt.

Wartime Service

He attested 10 April 1916 at Brandon, Manitoba: a farmer aged 19 of Brandon, unmarried, 5’8½” tall; his next-of-kin was his uncle Joseph William RENTON of Brandon.  

He was entitled to the General Service and Victory medals, and was killed in action in the vicinity of Passchendaele.

There is an article about and a Death announcement for Charles in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 24 November 1917; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 26 October 1918.

Has a entry in the National Roll of the Great War.
