Edward EAMES was born in London Colney, Hertfordshire in 1891, son of George Eames a General labourer, and Caroline Eames (nee Fearne). One of their ten children.


George Eames Married Caroline Fearne (his second wife) on 15th November 1879, at the London Colney Chapel, London Colney, Herts. George had two children George and Selina Eames by his first wife Emma Childs who he married on 11th November 1871, at St Peters church, London Colney, Herts.


He was Baptised on 4th January 1891, St Peters Church, London Colney, Herts.


1891 Census records Edward aged 4 months, living with his parents, half-brother George (18), sisters, Annie (9), Lily (7), brothers William (4), and Herbert (2), in London Colney, Herts.


1901 Census records Edward aged 10, living with his parents, half-brother George (28), half-sister Selina (25), sister Annie (17), brothers, William (14), Herbert (12), Charles (8), Bertie (6) and James (3), at Waterside, London Colney, Herts. His cousin Gladys Meikle (4) was living with the family, and they had a boarder, Joseph Baddley (24), a Plumber.


His mother Caroline Eames died in 1903, aged 48.


1911 Census records Edward aged 20, living with his widowed father, brothers William (24), Herbert (22), and Charles (18), at Waterside, London Colney, Herts. His married sister Irene and her husband Thomas Smith and their two children, at Woodside, London Colney, Herts. His cousin Gladys Mickle (14) was still living with the family.

Wartime Service

Edward travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment and issued with the service number 2894. On completion of his training, Edward was sent to the Western Front, he died on 21st April 1916, aged 26, of wounds he received in action. He is buried in St Venant Communal Cemetery in France. Grave Ref: II. H. 3.

Additional Information

His effects of £3-11s-04d, pay owing was split equally between his half-brother, half-sister, surviving brothers and sisters, his war gratuity of £7, went to his brother William.


His Headstone inscription "LORD ALL PITYING, JESU BLEST GRANT HIM THINE ETERNAL REST NEVER FORGOTTEN" was requested by his brother William Ames of 46 Bernard Street, St Albans, Herts.


Brother Private 4368 Bertie Eames of the Hertfordshire Regiment was Killed in Action on 13th November 1916. Aged 21.


Brother Lance Corporal 14992 Charles Eames of the Bedfordshire Regiment was Killed in Action on 16th April 1917, aged 24. 


Brother Private 42859 James Eames of the Middlesex Regiment Died of Wounds on 11th October 1917, aged 19.


Brother Leading Mechanic F6864 William Eames served in the Royal Naval Air Service Later the Royal Air Force, survived the war.


Brother Petty Officer F5308 Herbert Eames served in the Royal Naval Air Service, later the Royal Air Force, Survived the war.
