Herbert James was born in Cockfosters in 1897 to Ernest Charles Thrussell, a gardener, and Sarah (nee Brown).


On the 1901 Census the Family of Father, Mother, Herbert, Arthur and Alfred were living at 9, The Cottages, Cockfosters. There were further additions to the family of Doris ( 1902), Frederick (1904) and Winifred (1906). Herbert’s Father died in 1910.  By the 1911 Census Herbert, aged 14, was a servant and living in at 76 Cadogan Square, the home of Mr Micklem.

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted with 2/7 Battalion, the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment as Private 3394.


He went to Egypt at Alexandria on 1 Sep 1915 and was stationed in Cairo until Nov 1915 when he returned to Alexandria as part of Western Frontier Force.


His Battalion returned to Marseille on 15 May 1916 and were quarantined due to Typhus. 2/7 Battalion Middlesex were disbanded on 10 Jun 1916 and Herbert was transferred to 1/5 Battalion (City of London), London Rifle Brigade on the Somme and gained 11017 as his regimental number. Herbert died of wounds on 10 Oct while his Battalion was engaged in the Battle of Le Transloy.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £9 and arrears of £2 6s 5d was paid to his mother.
