Pre War

William Harwood Crouch was born in Norton, Baldock in 1884, the son of Walter and Elizabeth Crouch, and was baptised in Baldock on 1 June 1884. He was one of nine children, although three died in infancy. His parents had married in Baldock in 1876 and were living in Norton End, Baldock in 1881.

By the 1891 Census the family had moved to 31 Hewlett Road, Stratford le Bow, London, where his father was working as a railway goods checker. They remained there in 1901 at which time William was working as a builder's labourer. The family remained in Bow in 1911 but had moved to 55 Libra Road, Bow, London. William was then working as a printer packer.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London and joined the London Regiment, serving with the 9th Battalion in France from 1 June 1915.

William was killed in action on 19 October 1915 but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Belgium.
