Pre War

Frederick George Thurgood was born on 31 August 1897 in Bishop's Stortford to Alfred and Alice Thurgood, and baptised on 28 November 1897 at St Michael's Bishop's Stortford.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at Water Lane, Bishop's Stortford where his father was a bricklayer, but by 1911, although aged only 13 he was a part time servant/schoolboy living with Mr Arthur Harrington and his housekeeper at 16 Church Road, Bishop's Stortford. His parents were living at 2 Wharf Road, South Street, Bishop's Stortford.

Wartime Service

He initially joined the Hertfordshire Regiment in 1913, then a Territorial Force Battalion, under service no. 2460 and would have been called up at the outbreak of war.

He later transferred to the Somerset Light Infantry.

He was wounded and died of his wounds in one of three casualty clearing stations positioned at Heilly at the time.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £4 11s 11d. His father received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
