Ernest Charles Threadgold was born in Waltham Abbey, Essex, on 19th September 1880, son of William Threadgold a, Stationary Engine Driver at the Royal Gun Powder Factory and Sarah Ann Threadgold (nee Houghton). One of eleven children although three died in infancy.
He was Baptised on 19th December 1880, at Holy Cross and St Lawrence, Waltham Abbey, Essex.
1881 Census records Ernest aged 6 months, living with his parents, three brothers, two sisters, Alice (13) and Emily (10), in High Bridge Street, Waltham Cross, Herts. 1891 Census, Ernest (10) was at school, the family were still living in High Bridge Street.
1901 Census, Ernest (20) was employed as a Labourer at the Royal Gun Powder Factory. The family had now moved to 26 Sidney Street, Waltham Cross/Cheshunt, Herts. 1911 Census, Ernest (30) was single, working as a Nursery Garden Hand, still living at 26 Sidney Road, Waltham Cross/Cheshunt with his family.
His mother Sarah Ann Threadgold died in the early part of 1916, aged 73.
Wartime Service
Ernest enlisted at Cheshunt, on 28th January 1916, aged 35, at the time he was still living at 26 Sidney Road, employed at the Royal Small Arms factory, Enfield, posted to the Army Reserve the following day the 29th. Mobilized for war service on 22nd June 1916 and posted to Royal Fusiliers with the service number 46026, on completion of his training he was sent to France on 4th October 1916, arriving the following day the 5th, and sent to Base camp at Etaples. He was transferred to the “Queens Own” (Royal West Kent Regiment) (RWKR) with the service number G/18764 on 14th October 1916, joining the 11th Battalion, RWKR in the field on 16th October 1916, aged 37.
Ernest died on 27th May 1917, of wounds received in action, he is buried in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery Extension, in Belgium. Grave Ref; III. A. 1.
Additional Information
His sister Emily was awarded a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 1st January 1918, increased to 7/6 from 1st May 1918 to 31st December 1918, renewed in January 1919, until 31st December 1919, when it cease.
Sister Emily also received his effects of £2-7s-8d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.
His Headstone inscription “HE DIED DOING HIS DUTY” was requested by Mr. W. Threadgold, of 26 Sidney Rd., Waltham Cross, Herts, his father.
The Christ Church (formerly Holy Trinity Church) Memorial records the year of death as 1916.
