Pre War

Arthur Threadgold was born on 23 March 1894 at Thorley, Herts to James and Alice Threadgold and baptised on 13 May 1894 at Thorley. On the 1911 Census he was living with his widowed mother, brother Albert and sister Minnie, at Thorley Street, Thorley, Bishop's Stortford and his occupation is given as Groom Domestic. 


Before joining the Army, he was employed as Groom by Dr. William Hartigan of Thorley House. 

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted on November 17th 1915 into the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 5903 and went out to France on July 5th 1916. He was then transferred from the Hertfordshire Regiment into the 6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment.


He was killed in action on February 17th, 1917 at Grandcourt.

Additional Information

His mother Alice received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £2 6s. 7d, she also received a pension of 7s 6d a week from 18 September 1917. N.B. CWGC gives his reg. no. number as 37484 (incorrect). SDIGW and other military records give reg. no. as 36484.
