Walter Dyer was born in 1893 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of William John and Sarah Dyer (nee Hicks).  He was one of seven children, but one died in infancy.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at 100 George Street, Northchurch where his father was working as a boatman Captain. By 1911 they had moved 2 George Street, Sunnyside, Berkhamsted  at which time Walter was working as a brewers' labourer. He was said to be employed at Castle Dock before enlistment.

His mother died in 1912 and his father's address on pension records was Lock House, Raven's Lane, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Berkhamsted on 22 August 1914 and initially joined the 3rd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, serving in France from 1 May 1915. He later transferred to the 1st Battalion and served as a drummer.

Walter died of wounds on 23 March 1916 and is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-l-Avoue, France.
