Arthur William Dyer was born in 1889 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of William and Sarah Dyer, and baptised on 24 July 1889 at Great Berkhamsted. He was one of seven children but one died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 100 George Street, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a Boatman Captain. They had moved to 2 George Street in 1911 at which time Arthur was working as a general labourer.
He married Caroline Fanny Piper on 30 September 1911 at St Mary's Church, Barnes, Surrey. At the time of his marriage he was said to be living at 1 Railway Side, Barnes. They had two children, William (1914) and Doris (1915) and lived at Bridge House, Chapel Street , Berkhamsted.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Berkhamsted and served with the 11th Battalion, Essex Regiment.
He was killed in action on 23 September 1916, aged 27, when the Battalion were at Bernafay Wood and is buried in the Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 2s. She also received a pension of £1 2s 11d a week for herself and her children.
Brother Joseph served with the Royal Field Artillery and was killed in action on 14 June 1917. Brother Walter served with the 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment and died of wounds on 23 March 1916.
