Born on 26 Dec 1894 in Shanghai, China son of Cornelius and Elizabeth Frances (Gosse) Thorne, of Maison Rouge, Sidcup, Kent. mmEducated at Haileybury College 1908-13 and then emigrated to Canada.
Wartime Service
Enlisted as Private 758 in 90th Winnipeg Rifles, First Canadian Contingent and then obtained a commission in East Surrey Regiment when he returned to England. He was killed in action at Fricourt while on a mission to bomb an enemy sniper in no-man’s land. Three search parties had failed to find his body but his brother Cornelius, also of the East Surrey Regiment, went out to find him and brought him back although he was only yards from the enemy line. For this, Cornelius was awarded the MC.

Brother of Captain Cornelius Thorne VC who was killed in action on 30 Sept 1916 at Thiepval and of Major Joseph Thorne also killed in action on 29 May 1940 at Cassel, France. They are all commemorated on these memorials.
