Arthur Edward Dunton was born in 1892 in Buckland, Buckinghamshire to parents unknown but was brought up by his grandparents.
On the 1901 Census he was living with his grandparents, James and Harriett Dunton, although he was listed as their son. His grandfather was a farmer, living on his own account at Buckland, Buckinghamshire. By 1911 Arthur was listed as a grandchild living with his grandparents at Dorrison Farm, Buckland Common, Tring, Herts where his grandfather remained working as a farmer and 18 year old Arthur was working as a farm labourer.
He married Ethel Clark at Sunnyside Church, Great Berkhamsted, Herts on 15 March 1913 and they had two children, Raymond and Margaret.
He gave his occupation as a Crane Driver on enlistment and his address on his service record as 6 Collingwood Avenue, Hull.
After his death his widow later lived at 154 Bankside, George Street, Gt Berkhamsted.
Wartime Service
Arthur attested on attested 9 December 1915 and was placed into the army reserve, being mobilised on 29 October 1917 with the Inland Water Transport Unit of the Royal Engineers. He was sent to the Base Depot at Calais on 15 December 1917.
He was admitted on 22 November 1918 to the 3rd Stationary Hospital at Rouen, France suffering from influenza and bronchopneumonia arising from active service. He did not rally and died on 29 November 1918. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £5 10s and pay owing of £15 16s 1d, She also received a pension £1 5d 5d a week for herself and her two children.
