The diaries of 2/Lieu Oswald Felix Baerlein (MC) (Later Lieutenant and then Captain)
These diaries were kindly provided by Jane Hunter. Copyright remains with her and/or Herts At War.
The difficult job of transcribing was expertly undertaken by Irene Fussell.
The diaries are fascinating, especially so, as they are not like the more usual diaries written by fighting men. Oswald was in the Army Service Corps as was responsible for the "less talked about" side of the war - logistics and movements. The diaries - three volumes - span the entire war, from 4/8/1914 to 19/11/1918.
For your convenience we have provided three formats: transcribed pdf, images of the original, both in pdf and eBook formats. The former is obviously the easiest to read, albeit there are still some words which were not clear enough to read. If you like a challenge, when you come across them in the transcribed version see if you can make them out in the image file and let us know if you can!
You will find that the transcribed file references page numbers in the original.
