Pre War
According to the Lawson Thompson Scrapbooks - held by Hitchin Museum, he was in the Royal Army Medical Corps although his name could not be found on the ‘Soldiers died’ database as having been born at, enlisting or residing in Hitchin
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission only records two people of this name, but in neither case has a connection with Hitchin been found. One man was 3633 Private Henry O'Keefe of the 2nd Battalion Australian Imperial Force who was killed in action on the 24th July 1916 and commemorated at Villers Bretonneux in France.
The other man was 136576 Private H. O'Keefe of the 1st Saskatchewan Canadian Mounted Infantry who lost his life on the l 5th September 1916 aged 21 years and is buried in Plot 6, Row B, Grave 10 in Courcelette British Cemetery, France. He was the son of James and Henrietta O'Keefe of 118, Stephendale Road, Fulham
A third and most likely possibility comes from the Medal Rolls that he was Henry W. O'Keefe, an Acting Corporal A/358090 in the Army Service Corps who committed suicide by drowning whilst temporarily insane on the 25th March 1919. His name does not appear in the Corps volume of ‘Soldiers died’ database and no link with Hitchin has been established.
